Celebrating Healthy Aging Month – Aging Well at The Columns

Healthy aging is about continuing to live with purpose, connection and joy.

September is Healthy Aging Month, but supporting the well-being of older adults is part of everyday life at The Columns.

Healthy aging does not mean avoiding every change that comes with age. It means finding realistic ways to support the body, mind and spirit while continuing to enjoy the people, routines and experiences that make life meaningful.

Throughout September, we are celebrating the many ways older adults can continue moving, connecting, learning and thriving.

What Does Healthy Aging Look Like?

Healthy aging looks different for every person. It may mean maintaining strength and balance, staying socially connected, learning something new or having the right support available when it is needed.

Five important parts of healthy aging include:

Movement

Regular movement can help support strength, balance, flexibility and independence. This might include walking, stretching, chair exercises, dancing or participating in an activity you enjoy.

Nourishment

Balanced meals, adequate protein and proper hydration help support energy and overall well-being. Individual dietary needs should always be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.

Connection

Friendship, family involvement and a sense of belonging are important at every age. Meaningful connection can come through shared meals, group activities, community involvement or a simple conversation with a friend.

Purpose

Having something to anticipate or contribute can bring meaning to each day. Hobbies, volunteering, faith, family traditions and helping others can all create a renewed sense of purpose.

Curiosity

Learning and trying new things can keep life engaging. Reading, puzzles, music, art, technology and new experiences give older adults opportunities to stay curious and involved.

Healthy Aging Includes Knowing When to Accept Support

Maintaining independence does not always mean doing everything alone. Sometimes, the right environment and level of assistance can make it easier for an older adult to remain active, connected and engaged.

Assisted living may provide help with daily needs while allowing residents to continue making choices, enjoying private space, participating in activities and building meaningful relationships.

At The Columns, residents are encouraged to bring their favorite belongings, continue treasured routines and make their apartment feel like home.
